looking on the bright side of life

so, some of you may already be aware, but my job as the office manager/coordinator at the democratic party of hawaii came to an uneventful end yesterday. with no firm prospects for employment currently, i have become a statistic. i have joined the ranks of the unemployed and will very soon, pending a job falling from the sky, be collecting unemployment compensation.

while it is an odd reality to know there’s no job for me to go to tomorrow, i’m planning on using my abundance of free time for self-improvement. despite the hit to my already meager income, i’m looking forward to a life without work, at least for the short term.

i don’t intend on lounging around the house day in and out, but plan to use the time to do other things: photography, beach visits, self-promotion, campaigning, writing, and more. i won’t spend my unemployment being a bum. like i said, self-improvement will be the name of the game (probably with the exception of quitting smoking, but one never knows).

if i’m unable to find a job in the short term, i’m fairly confident i’ll have one by the end of the year, or early next year. in the meantime, it’s going to be a new and strange existence operating within the unemployment system and having everyday free to do whatever.

there are some potential stressors, however, as its unclear at this point just how much i’ll be able to collect each week from unemployment. and while i’m fairly certain i’ll be taking home less, until that first check comes in, i won’t know by just how much. with rent and credit card debt as my major expenses, i’m not sure how stressful the money situation will make everything else. i’ll just have to wait and see.

finally, i do want to take this opportunity to thank the party chair. i understand times are tough and sometimes hard choices have to be made. it was a good opportunity and i’m thankful to have had it. i think i learned quite a bit during my relatively short tenure there, though i’m not sure its learned knowledge that is easily verbalized.

despite no longer being employed there, i will continue to give my time to the party. i’ll continue to work on convention planning and other areas where i can lend a hand. just as being the chair of the registration and credentials committee last year helped me with credibility and name recognition in within the party, so has the short time i’ve spent working at headquarters.

stay tuned as i imagine i’ll be posting more frequently in the coming weeks and months. there is little doubt that the experience will be… interesting.
